The Use of Cookies at this Site
Paranoia by many users of the Internet are usually unjustified. Though the use of cookies is very much an intrusive effort made by many webmasters in an effort to gather information and personal data. Much of this has been covered by various journals citing examples of doubleclick.com and the various "ad-click" sites.
My site makes use of one single cookie. The cookie is controlled by www.statcounter.com and is used ONLY to remember that you've visited my site. In this manner, my web counter will not count any subsequent visits you make to my site. This is done so my counter reflects the number of UNIQUE visitors, rather than multiple reloads/refreshes, or return visits. It is of my understanding that the cookies by the counter are not used for any malicious or intrusive reasons.
The only other cookie that is being set is done so by Paypal through my Donation link. I have no control over this cookie, and am not sure as to why it loads when the button is displayed.
You can block these cookies specifically, or all cookies in general. With IE 6.0 you need to go to "Tools/Internet Options" and select the "Privacy" tab.
To block all cookies except those you wish to allow:
Select Advanced.
Click "Override automatic cookie handling" so a check-mark appears.
Click BLOCK under First and Third Party cookies.
Click OK
Click the SITES button. Add all websites you wish to allow, clicking the "ALLOW" button. You should only enter the domain and extension (i.e. statcounter.com) rather than the full address.
NOTE: When you view a web site that tries to set a cookie, and you have the settings above, you will see an icon of an eye with a red-dot and a white line, appear on the bottom right corner of the browser status bar. Double-click this icon to see what sites are attempting to set cookies. You can then double-click the site you wish to allow cookies, and select "ALLOW" on the appearing menu.
